experiencing local -
mood board
For the first assignment, our class were separated into 4 categories of topic based on the experiencing local title. The 4 categories were products, food, fashion, and arts. Based on the 'experiencing local' title we had to pick 3 subjects based on the category given to do some research about the subject. For me, the finalized subject chosen was 'Satay Celup', a famous meal originated in Melaka till present. It was known for its famous peanut sauce and the variety choices of raw food skewers dipping into the hot peanut sauce.

Throughout this assignment, I learned a lot about the subject itself like history, process of making, concepts and more information which actually helps me to understand more about the characteristics of the subject.

With all the research done, we had to finalized it by making a mood board to represent our product. To be honest, this assignment was quite challenging and difficult for me as my subject is not a dish but a meal. If I were to talk about the food, it is way too much to be included. Instead, I divert the focus towards the sauce and conclude the food with their similarities like 'skewers' and 'raw'. Overall, it was not that smooth of course but I still manage to find the keywords and information I wanted to focus on for my next assignments.

Assignment 2 is actually a group work project where the whole class was divided into 4 groups as well and were given separate task. For this assignment, we had our site visit in Melaka to experience and observe the culture and tradition of the site. My group was given the task to do measuring for the highest floor of the building during the visitation. After the site visit, we compile all information and measurement to proceed with our group's project which is model making. After discussion we decided to use perspex for the whole building including the details like windows, roof tiles, and door. The columns and beams were made from balsa wood to show the contrast of the construction elements of the building.

Throughout this assignment, it was actually quite interesting as it was my first time experiencing laser cutting for a project. Also, our group members spend great amount of time and effort for this model to make it in perfect shape, this also proved that our teamwork in model making is quite strong.

Our final assignment is to design a start-up garage based on the building we visited in assignment 2. My start-up garage is about promoting local with my assignment 1 subject 'Satay Celup'.

Dip Deep Skewers is the name of the start-up garage which was translated from the word 'Satay Celup' itself. As satay celup itself was quite well known in Melaka, I decided to change and adapt the satay celup with different spaces. With my main target user, the young adults, the first floor was used as a pub, selling both alcoholic beverage and satay celup. The second floor was proposed as a night market, not exactly night market but some features were included into it. It is proposed in this way to promote the culture of night life and night market in Melaka based on our visitation to Jonker Street. As for the third floor, it was proposed as a convenient-like dining as young adults nowadays are more laid-back and love technologies, I designed the dining into a more less movement dining by using sunken table seats. As for servings, I added conveyer belt and a device to serve the customers with the dishes instead of an actual human waiter or themselves.

After completing this assignment, I realized that having the correct drawings and measurements is really important because throughout this subject I have no idea how many times I had to modify the plans and sections for the for the structural elements as some of them provided are not align which actually uses quite an amount of time correcting this part. Besides, designing on an old building is quite a challenge as the plan and spaces divided in the building are very odd. With facing this issue, I had to do lots of research on how to make it a modern building at the same time keeping the old traditional features in it. I also realized that my photoshop skills are lacking and needed to be improve to enhance my presentation board appearance.
