Introduction to Interior Design Projects

001

During the first class, we had been told to draw 12 different poses of our daily routine. Since our theme is "Extreme", I decided to draw a few volleyball poses. As for the other poses, I pick a few from my everyday "must-do" activity which includes gaming, napping, running, waiting, texting, opening the door and stretching.

During the process of drawing, I struggle a little because I am really bad in drawing human figure. I am so bad at it that the proportion for every part of the body is incorrect and with wrong measurement. So, I ended up watching a few videos on how to draw human figure and I found the easiest one and work on it.

After finishing the first task, we were told to pick 3 poses from the 12 and create more extreme poses. I picked napping, stretching and opening the door which I had some poses in mind already. We also have to take a picture of our self doing the 3 poses and measure/record the measurement of our self and the furniture. We have to draw the plan and elevation as well together with the recorded measurements labelled.

3 poses to more extreme poses

During the third class, we have this group activity where we are grouped in a group of 5 which includes me, Joyi, Kimberly, Janson and Wei Yan.

Our task for this activity is to find a suitable furniture similar the poses we chose and draw it on the 2 meter butter paper on the wall with 1:1 scale. The pose we chose was slumber which is a person lying down on a furniture.

The problem is that we are suppose to find the furniture in the campus but none of us know such furniture exist on campus. So, our first attempt is to try the "Uni Square" located near the lake or outside ADP classroom. For the second attempt, I suggested lying down on 2 chairs and the third is to find a bed but the classrooms with bed are all locked. In the end all of the furniture we found are unusable.

Luckily we found a "beach chair-like" furniture located at Block E level 2. We quickly measure everything including height, length, width and slanted side. At the same time, I was the model so my members have to measure my body parts as well.

After we started sketching, we found out that our measurement are actually recorded in inches so we have to go back to the furniture and do the measuring again.

Later on, we have to think about the transition from lying down to sitting on a chair. The first pose is easy because it's just sitting up straight acting like trying to get of the chair. As for the second pose, I have to act like I am about to sit on a chair which I have to some squats, holding on the pose until they are done taking picture or drawing the segment of the body parts. And so, our 1:1 scale look like this.

For this activity, we are suppose to do some research about insects regarding their physical characteristic, habitat, behavior, ability and fun fact. My group had chosen beetles. We also divided our task to research on the keyword we chose and I picked ability.

For beetles, I can't really find much about their ability in general because different species have their own traits, if I were to focus on the species to talk about every each of their abilities, I don't think there is enough time for me to present. So, I decided to do the general but only pick a few of species to talk about.

I found out that beetles are all around the world because they can adapt to any kinds of environment like wood, leaf, underground, places with water and so on. Besides, their mandibulate mouthparts are designed for biting and chewing. Furthermore, beetles also can be separated into the 'good' and 'bad'. Bad beetles destroy crops and properties while the good ones pollinate flowers, get rid of garbage and eat insects that destroy plants. For example, a ladybug. Ladybug eats aphids and scale insects that are sucking out the plant juice that destroy plants, this is where ladybugs are very welcome by the farmers and gardeners. As we all know, different species have different abilities. One of the example is Bombardier beetle. Bombardier beetle can actually spray toxic solution which contains the mixture of hydrogen peroxide and hydroquinone with the temperature of at least 100 degree celsius. Besides, dung beetle is also famous for its abilities. It rolls animal waste into a ball. The ball act as their home, place to lay eggs and also their snacks.

For the next class, we were told to put everything we researched in a piece of mahjong paper and present it to everyone. Our paper are divided into different sections because all of us did research on different keywords which makes each sections having different drawing and writing method.

After the group presentation, we were told to choose a specific type of insect for our next coming assignment. We are suppose to do research of that specific insect about its physical characteristic, habitat, ability, behavior, fun facts and so on to draw a visual mind map and also draw the zoom in parts of its body.

My group is about beetles so I have to choose 1 specific beetle to do research on. In this assignment, finding a beetle that I am interested in is the hardest thing ever. There are so many types of beetles and some even look like cockroaches with long body, I find it very disgusting. I chose geotrupidae beetle at first, as I start doing the research about it, this geotrupidae beetle is actually a dung beetle with a fancy name. However, one of my group mate already chose dung beetle so I have to change it and start all over again. Many dung beetle with fancy names keep appearing, while the others looks like cockroaches which were too disgusting to even look at, so I was stuck at that process for quite a long time. Luckily, I found this beetle called hister beetle which is exactly the type of beetle I wanted to draw.

Hister beetle is a super duper small beetle. Its average size is about 1-10mm. They have super short wings that 2 of their tergites are visible. They also have clubbed end antenna. Hister beetle are usually shiny black or metallic green. They usually appear in dung, dead animals and vegetables, sandy area, under tree bark, mammal burrows and ant or termite colonies. Hister beetle are most active during the night and will fake death if they are threatened. Furthermore, they look like a tiny black seed from afar. They also can live in harmony with ants or termites and are able to control houseflies. There are about 3900 different species of hister beetle in the world. Hister beetles have proved useful during forensic investigations to help in time of death estimation.

After researching and understand more about insects, we now have to transform the insect into a human form. We were given a template of a mini robot. After building it, it looks like this.

What we have to do is to add the clothing, face feature and any other physical appearance they have.

My character is a human form of Hister beetle. As we all know beetle are exoskeleton which their external skeleton protects their inner body. With this fact, I tried changing it to endoskeleton. From the image of my character, there's a 'wing' like object at the back of the character, but it is actually the bones from her body. The name of my character is Ariux. The name Ariux is actually from the scientific name of Hister beetle which is Acritus spp.

storyline

Ariux is an ordinary teenager, living a normal life. She was born with strong bones and she was aware of it but she does not know about her supernatural abilities until the day of incident. There was a car crash. Her parents were killed but she survive with just several cuts and bruises. She was upset and furious. At that time, one of her bone came out and killed the killer. She was shocked at her ability while the others starts calling her a monster before of the object coming out from her back. Soon, she found out that the accident was planned by an organization which was up to something. She decided to have her revenge and find out the motive of the organization and the reason why the parents were killed.

Strong bones, 'flexible' bones, summon bone-like sword from the palm, sharp hearing, ability to sense movement, has no effect if she were stabbed by her own bones instead her body will absorb the bone in, her bones that come out from her body does not hurt her physically exp: skin

abilities

about

  • She only does her mission at night (finding information/revenge)

  • Able to summon maximum 6 bones from her back

  • Wear mask to hide her identity (she was called a monster)

  • Too much energy used will damage her body (too much bones are coming out)

  • Fake death by stabbing herself with her own bones

  • Bones act as weapon and shield (because its hard)

additional weapon

Because she only can summon bones from her back and hands so there is and additional weapon at her shoe, A SPIKE, which is not related to her ability.

likes

  • Cracking her knuckles

  • Exercise

  • Caffeine (does her mission at night)

dislikes

  • Being asked too much questions (doesn't want anyone to know about her ability)

  • Gossips (herself being the topic)

Her strength is having really strong bones and fast reaction (sense movement & sharp hearing) while her weakness is her body itself (too much energy used will damage her body)

Character

The materials used for the mascot is mainly colour papers. As for the 'bones' at the back, I use an origami technique which I found it in YouTube to fold it. For the bone at the hand, I just cut a small piece of paper and roll it diagonally to give the shape, texture and length of the bone.

005

After finish the mascot assignment, we are moving on the the next assignment which also have something related to the insect we chose. We have to choose a few keywords to match the category according to the insect we chose.

I chose centralized for organization of my insect because Hister beetle is short and round or maybe a little oval. With its colour like shiny black or metallic green, it gives off an effect of everything were gathered in the center of the body.

For tangible, I chose

  • Shiny (shiny black/metallic green)

  • Dotted (it has dotted spot on its wings which cannot be seen by naked eye)

  • Segmented (represents the lines on the wings which looks like it is segmented)

For intangible, I chose

  • Lying (because Hister beetle fake its death)

  • Nocturnal (Hister beetle is most active at night)

  • Predacious (it lives in dead animals to eat maggots and they even kill their own kind)

After gathering all the keywords, we are suppose to create an image representing the keywords we chose using MDF board as the base and plaster to create 3D texture for the image.

After finishing everything, our task now is to build several models in the process of transformation. Based on the abstract, my organization is centralized. I have to build something following the keywords I chose.

1st

For the first model, it's all about form. I decided to make a cube, 2 cuboid and 4 more long cuboids to make the model. For the long cuboids, I decided to make it interlocking the cube which forms a segmented look similar to my abstract. The other 2 cuboid are placed above and below the cube with face to face method for future transformation purposes.

2nd

For the second model, it's about design language. I actually wanted to make the model similar to the abstract, so I made a lot of rectangles to make it look like segmented. What's important is the transformation of the cube. Through subtraction, I made a scoop-cut like model which is located in the middle and the bottom of the model.

3rd

Later, we have to start adding context for the third model. There are choices like hanging, sunken, penetrate, and parasite. For the third model, I chose sunken because it has connection with my insect hister beetle. Because hister beetle lives in dead living things like animals or vegetable, the reason why they chose to love there is because maggots exists and maggot is their food. Dead animals have wound, in the wound there lives maggots and also other insects like hister beetle. This is how sunken was chosen for the context, even though my model doesn't looks like one.

4th

For my fourth model, I changed my context from sunken to parasite. This is because in the animal wound, parasite is happening, this makes it looks like the insect is eating up the body. From the fourth model onwards, we have to add opening to the model. This time I decided to subtract the biggest piece in the middle and made it into a mouth-like opening.

5th

The fifth model requires an opening and spaces. From the fourth model's opening, I transform a mouth-like opening into a twisting opening. It's a transition from open to twist. But eventually, my spaces is not big enough.

final model

For the final model, before the final design became my final design, I made an uglier version of my final design. I was not on purpose of course but it was not what I've expected, so I had to redo a new one.

final model - finalised

I decided to combine the fourth and the fifth model together. Because my context is parasite, I used the idea from fourth model to make it the element for parasite and make it more scale-like and spiky to have the predacious look.

006

007

For our final presentation, I prepared an A0 size board for the presentation. This board is actually 4 A2 size paper combined into the complete piece. I decide to print the whole paper because the orthographic I drew are actually overlapping on the other piece of paper. In the board, I drew the character and the insect first because they are the most important element in the board. I decided to place it in the middle due to my organization : centralized. With the character's ability, it gave me an idea to use it as a divider to separate each category.
