Design Communication
001
For our first class of Design Communication, we were told to draw capsicum and lady's finger with CONFIDENCE. Because we are used to drawing something in many strokes instead of a line.
-
we draw with our own method.
-
we tried to draw in 10 or 15 seconds? (I FORGOT).
-
we were limit to draw continuously without lifting our pencil up.
-
the same but faster.
-
we start learning contouring.
-
we can lift our pencil but only can draw one line

This is how my capsicum looks like
hatching, cross hatching, scibbling & stippling
For the next task, we learn about contouring. It's not my first time seeing an object/image using contouring but I did not know it was a kind of method to determine the lighter parts and darker parts. To be honest, this is my first time doing it so it doesn't look really good and it's also kind of hard to understand on how to draw it. We were told to practice on drawing 2 capsicum and 2 lady's finger using contouring. After that, we have to cut the capsicum and lady's finger into half (vertical and horizontal) and to draw the inside using contouring as well.
Drawing capsicum with contouring is much easier compare to lady's finger for me because capsicum have smooth surface which can see the light and dark tone easier. While lady's finger have a soft surface but not as smooth as capsicum and also lady's finger have (furry?) I don't know what is that suppose to be call on the surface which makes it more difficult to differentiate the tone.
As for our homework, we are going to do hatching on the capsicum and lady's finger. There are different types of hatching method.
Hatching is a kind of method to show the tonal value of an object. This method only show the tonal value in one direction or parallel lines.
Cross hatching is a little similar to hatching but added lines coming from the opposite direction which creates something like 'X' effect.
Scribbling is also one of the technique but it is more to randomly drawing lines to create the tonal value
Stippling is a method which requires lots of patience to complete it because its method is to shade by using only small dots. A little mistake like accidentally making the dot turn into a small line, the whole picture is not consider as stippling anymore.

For the second class of Design Communication, we are going to learn about perspective drawing. Before we start to draw, we were given task to train our straight line skill, perfect circle and perfect square. We scribble the whole A3 paper with lines, circles and square with confident and only use one stroke to draw it.

Later, we learned how to draw cubes using 1 point perspective and 2 point perspective. Drawing cubes using perspective is actually quite easy for me because I learned perspective during my foundation year.
After drawing cubes, we try turning the cubes into furniture like table or chair. For me, I still can manage to draw furniture with 1 point perspective however, the size of the furniture a little small. As for 2 point, I find it a little hard to draw because of the size I draw as well.
For the assignment, we are suppose to draw 1 furniture for 1 point and 2 point perspective.
For 1 point, I decided to draw sofa. The most difficult part of drawing the sofa is the hand rest and the curve part. As for 2 point, I chose a stool which is much more smaller compare to a sofa, but the difficult part of drawing the stool is the details and the leg of the stool because the stool only have 3 legs.

003
After learning how to draw perspective on objects, the next task is to draw perspective of the interior of a house or building. We were told to search pictures of a living room, washroom, kitchen and a bedroom.

After searching for the images, the washroom and bedroom I choose is not approve because of its lack of furniture / too minimal. So, I only have 2 image to draw for the perspective exercise.

drawing

After learning how to draw, our assignment is to find 2 new images of 1 point and 2 point perspective. Drawing perspective is not a very big deal but finding the image is the difficult part because all the images I found is mostly in portrait and also some of it is lack of furniture.

For this week, we finally start learning about model making. We are suppose to build an interior of an apartment with ground floor and mezzanine floor. I was teamed up with Joyi and Bryan for this assignment. Due to our first time making a house using modelling card, foam board and art card, we faced many difficulties during the process of making it.
Firstly, we were given a floor plan of both floors, an elevation view of the house, and a 3D image of the house so that we can work on it according to the design and measurements given. We faced difficulties in mostly measurements because the measurement usually starts in the middle of the column and also the thickness have to be the same as well, so we have to discuss it with the lecturers about it. The second issue is the height of and thickness of the mezzanine floor, we also ended up seeking for the lecturer's help for this and finally we are able to work on our task smoothly.

For me, I was in charge of making the wall in the building. It was easy for me but because I am a really precise person so I make sure that every card I cut is accurate and ended up using lots of time in doing it. The following problems we faced is the window, Joyi was in charge of making it but ended up making a window without the opening part and also sticking the window in between two pieces of transparent sheet which makes the glue mark visible and not really nice to look at. We ended up redoing the window again.
For the following week, we are going to create our own theme for the house and make our own furniture. We decided to design the house and furniture using the concept minimal. Here are the images of the house we made:

This assignment was very challenging because we get to experience how to make mini models of house and furniture. Besides, this assignment also help us to understand each other's strength and weaknesses of the members and also get to interact with them more, not only our group but also the other group members because most of us spend our night in the studio doing the models together until dawn.

This week's lesson, we learn about orthographic projection. It is a drawing method that objects features to be projected to an imaginary planes. It shows 3D image that can be view in 2D from different view like plan, elevation and sections.
First of all, we were asked to draw the views of different shapes given by the lecturer. To be honest, all the shapes are quite easy for me except for the last one. The last one is not that hard, actually it's just a little confusing but I still manage to get it right.

That day onwards, we have this in class activity to show that we actually understand what we learn in class. We were given an assignment brief that shows the shape we are suppose to draw. Imagining the shapes was easy, but drawing it which actual measurements and projecting is a little confusing. It took me quite long to finish it but still having some errors in it. I ended up have to erase some part and correct it to get approval.

For our homework, we are suppose to draw another shape given in the assignment brief by using tracing paper. Using tracing paper was actually much more better than using catridge for me because I can see the lines better. After understanding my mistakes, I finish it without any difficulties and it was much better than what I was expecting when I am doing the work.
ORTHOGRAPHIC PROJECTION

006
After finishing our first model making, we were asked to draw a plan of our house model with our own furniture. We had to do our practice in class as usual to make sure that we understand the things we were drawing. Although we took the whole tutorial class to finish it but at least we understand how to draw a plan of a building. There is also a floor plan that had given to us during the model making assignment which has the exact same side and measurement we were suppose to draw. With that it is much more easier compare to directly measuring from the model. But the only thing we have to do is to change the scale from 1:25 to 1:50.

TECHNICAL DRAWING
Plan

007
After completing the plan for the house, we now learn about how to draw an elevation view. From the plan we drew, we located 4 section A-A, B-B, C-C, and D-D in the plan for cross section drawing of the house a.k.a elevation view. Before this, we had completely no idea on how to draw a plan with just the section given. Later, we learned an easier way to draw which is to project the walls and columns from the plan to a new paper to indicate the walls and columns for the elevation view. We were told to draw section B-B ( view facing the window ) and section C-C ( view facing the cabinet ) with pencil first.

B-B, C-C
A-A, D-D
As for our homework, we are suppose to draw section A-A ( view facing the stairs ) and section D-D ( view facing the bathroom and bedroom ) on tracing paper.
008
After leaning how to draw elevation, we now learn about this drawing method called oblique. It is basically a 3D drawing using the 60/30 degree angle or 45/45 angle. We first try drawing shapes in oblique. Drawing shapes in 3D is consider easy for me, it is challenging as well because it gets to train your imagination of the object as well.
TECHNICAL DRAWING
Oblique
After learning how to draw oblique on 3D objects, we have to draw oblique using the house model we built AGAIN. The problem of this oblique drawing is that you can imagine well, but when it comes to drawing it, OMG I swear it's the hardest thing to draw so far in my life. Everything went out of shape just because of the angles. Drawing this actually annoys me so much. And again, we used our plan for the house model to project the walls and columns before we start drawing the interiors.

For the final of everything, we are suppose to apply what we learn in this class to Introduction to Design Projects now, which means, we have to draw plans, elevation, perspective, oblique, section drawing of our final model in Introduction to Design Projects class. To be very honest, it's one of my worst nightmare drawing my model.

Because of my lots and lots of spiky part in my model, I suffered a lot, it's hard to differentiate which is which. My neck and back gets so sore from drawing this. What I felt that time was, why did I make such a complicated model? By looking at my classmate's, their model is so much easier and it feels like I can finish it in a day, also I have to urge to trade models with them but I am glad that I did not.
After drawing everything, it looks so cool, it did not expect that I can actually finish up everything because of the time limit but seriously my drawings are so cool. Although it might not be perfect but I am actually quite happy and satisfied about it.
